Following an investigative operation spanning from August to September 2024, the police successfully uncovered a fraud center based in an industrial unit in Hung Hom. The scale and organization of this operation were shocking; during the October 9 raid, authorities detained 27 individuals, with a significant proportion hailing from various countries, including mainland China, Taiwan, India, and Singapore. Highly trained tech experts, including recent university graduates, played a crucial role in establishing this operation’s digital infrastructure. They leveraged artificial intelligence not just to create alluring images but also to ensure that video interactions appeared genuine, manipulating both visual and auditory elements using deep fake technology. This cutting-edge approach maximized their deceptive capabilities, enabling them to maintain their fraud for an extended period before being detected.

The seizure of luxury items alongside state-of-the-art technology by the police indicated the opulent lifestyle the fraudsters led, funded directly by their illicit activities. Law enforcement officials recovered more than $25,000 in crime proceeds, emphasizing the financial scale of this operation. Charges of conspiracy to defraud and possession of offensive weapons have been levied against those apprehended, showcasing the extensive legal ramifications these individuals now face.
